Solothurn on Aar Cycle Route

The Aar Cycle Route begins in Interlaken on Lake Thun against the backdrop of the Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger mountains and is one of the most well-known cycle routes in Switzerland. You will pass through the Swiss capital of Bern, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the famous Toblerone chocolate is made. Cycling along the Jura with its Baroque towns, you will come to the confluence of the Aar and Rhine Rivers and continue up-river towards the Rhine Falls, which you will be able to experience during a spectacular boat trip. The Council town of Constance on Lake Constance is your destination. The Aar Cycle Route is also suitable for those not used to cycling.

Day 1
Interlaken

Individual arrival in Interlaken

The town between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun is a popular starting point for trips to the Aar-ravine, a magical natural phenomena which can be discovered by way of tunnels and bridges. The famous mountain world of the Berner Oberland should not be missed. You can enjoy a view of the Jungfrau, Mönch and Eiger mountains on a trip on the Schynige-Platte-Railway. If you have booked rental bicycles, these will be available for collection in your hotel.

Day 2
Bern

Interlaken - Bern, approx. 35 km + boat trip

Your day begins with a boat trip on Lake Thun before cycling at a leisurely pace to Bern. Goethe thought this town was the most beautiful in Switzerland, the old town is a World Cultural Heritage Site. Bern has something for everyone; for example you can view some of Paul Klee’s work or stroll through the old town along Kramgasse. Make sure you visit the Zytgloggeturm (Clock Tower)!

Day 3
Biel/Bienne

Bern - Biel, approx. 50 km

Cycling along the Aar River and Lake Wohlen you will come to the bilingual town of Biel/Bienne. The Swiss watch-making industry made the town famous. In the Omega museum you can learn all about the industry. The many fountains in the old town are also worth a look, the majority of which are fed by the Roman springs. They were once thought to be holy. The lake shore known as the “Strandboden” is also beautiful.

Day 4
Solothurn

Biel - Solothurn, approx. 30 km

Today’s stage is a short one, therefore you should take the chance to have a cable car journey above the Lake. You will then cycle on towards Solothurn at a laid back pace. The town is the capital of the Canton and is considered to be the most beautiful Baroque city in Switzerland with its Baseltor Gate, the St.-Ursen-Cathedral and numerous other buildings. The beasts of prey park in Subingen is another visitor attraction nearby.

Day 5
Aarau

Solothurn - Aarau, approx. 60 km

The River Aar which by now has grown in size begins to define the surrounding landscape. Villages and meadows, as well as the impressive Aarburg rock formation which is topped by the castle of the same name, are all located along the route to Aarau, which still bears the marks of the 16th Century and which was once the capital city of the Helvetic Republic. The town is also known as the “town of the beautiful gables” due to 70 intricately painted gables.

Day 6
Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen

Aarau - Schaffhausen, approx. 65 km + train ride

A short train journey brings you to Brugg from where you will cycle towards the meeting point of the Aar and Rhine Rivers near the town of Koblenz. From here you will continue your trip up-river and will be able to hear the thundering waters of the Rhine Falls from afar. You will experience the Waterfall up close on a spectacular boat trip. Schaffhausen is only a short cycle away and is towered over by the Munot Fortress and filled with Renaissance buildings with beautiful oriels.

Day 7
Stein am Rhein

Schaffhausen - Constance/Kreuzlingen, approx. 55 km

Today you will cycle to Stein am Rhein with its many fresco-painted houses and from here on along the shores of Lake Constance towards Constance. The old diocesan town was the setting for the only council ever to be convened north of the Alps during the Middle Ages. A visit to the Rosgarten Museum shows you the history of the town in an historic setting, before you have a relaxing coffee and can reminisce about the experiences of your holiday.

Day 8
Constance

Individual journey home or extension of stay

Your tour at the Aar Cycle Route comes to an end after breakfast. Individual return journey to Interlaken or home. We would also be more than happy to extend your holiday in Constance.

    The route is mainly along its own special tarred cycle paths or quiet regional roads. There are very few hills and the few that do exist are not very steep.

    By minibus including bikes will follow soon.
    This trip must be self-organised by train. Connections every half hour. Duration of trip ca. 3.5-4 hours. 1-2 changeovers. We can provide you with a voucher. For those with a Swiss Half-price Rail ticket we recommend that you purchase your own tickets. The train journey can be taken at either the start or end of your holiday.
